Maya goes 100% recycled for all new prepaid cards by end-2026

Fintech firm Maya plans to make all newly produced prepaid cards from recycled plastic by the end of 2026 as it seeks to reduce its use of virgin materials.

The transition will cover Maya-issued Mastercard and Visa prepaid cards made from recycled polyvinyl chloride, or rPVC. The cards will carry a “Made from 100 percent Recycled Plastic” mark on the back while retaining their existing security, durability and functionality.

Maya’s prepaid cards can be used for ATM withdrawals and purchases at more than 150 million merchant locations worldwide where Mastercard and Visa are accepted.

“The most meaningful sustainability efforts are often the ones that become part of how a business operates,” Maya Group president and Maya Bank co-founder Shailesh Baidwan said.

“By transitioning our card portfolio to recycled plastic, we’re integrating more responsible practices into products used by our customers every day. It reflects our belief that sustainability should be embedded into how we build and grow our business,” he added.

The shift is part of Maya’s sustainability program, which covers financial inclusion, responsible innovation, customer trust, employee wellbeing and environmental stewardship.

Since 2022, Maya has monitored and worked to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. It also runs #MayaSWITCH, an employee-led initiative promoting energy conservation and reduced use of single-use plastics in the workplace

The card rollout adds a consumer-facing element to those efforts as Maya expands its digital financial services business.
