Sun Life Financial-Philippines Foundation Inc. has partnered with the World Wide Fund for Nature-Philippines to launch a climate-adaptive farming project aimed at bolstering food security and rural livelihoods in the country’s disaster-prone south.
The “Food Shed Farming Enterprise” initiative involves the construction of four new modular food hubs in the municipalities of Alegria and Surigao del Norte. The project is designed to benefit 120 rice farmers and approximately 600 residents, providing infrastructure built from sustainable materials to withstand localized climate disruptions.
The food sheds utilize replicable technologies including rainwater harvesting, composting, and natural pest control to ensure a steady supply of affordable, nutritious produce in low-income areas.
Participants will receive training in basic financial literacy and the establishment of community-led savings and loan groups.
“This collaboration goes beyond building food sheds; it is about enabling communities to take control of their food systems in a way that is sustainable and climate-resilient,” said Chrisma Salao, WWF-Philippines Director for Conservation Programs.
The expansion follows previous rollouts in Albay and Negros Oriental, supported by additional funding from Sun Life’s global headquarters.
Joy Castillo, President of Sun Life Foundation, said the project demonstrates a shared commitment to building healthier, more resilient communities through environmental sustainability.
Sun Life Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Sun Life Philippines, the nation’s longest-standing life insurance company.
