Strong core lending, deposits drive BDO’s 3% net income growth in H1

BDO Unibank Inc. reported a 3% rise in net income to P40.6 billion for the first half of 2025, driven by strong performance in its core lending and deposit-taking operations.

The Sy-led bank saw double-digit loan growth across all segments and higher fee and insurance income. However, the bank noted that continued investments in market coverage and digital infrastructure slightly tempered the overall earnings growth.

BDO’s gross customer loans increased 14% year-on-year to P3.4 trillion, while total deposits rose 8% to more than P4 trillion.

The bank maintained a healthy CASA (current account, savings account) ratio of 69%, indicating robust low-cost funding.

Net interest income climbed 7%, while non-interest income surged 15%, primarily due to higher fees and a strong showing from its insurance arm.

The bank also reported improved asset quality, with its non-performing loan (NPL) ratio decreasing to 1.75%. NPL coverage remained stable at 140%, reflecting prudent risk management practices.

BDO’s capital position remained strong, with a capital adequacy ratio of 15.4%. Return on average common equity stood at 13.9% for the period, and book value per share grew 12% to P113.04.

BDO remains cautiously optimistic given persistent global uncertainties, including geopolitical tensions and U.S. trade policies.

However, the bank believes the Philippines’ consumer-led economy and domestic resilience will provide a solid foundation for continued growth.

BDO said it “remains well-positioned to manage emerging risks and capitalize on opportunities given its robust capital base and diversified business franchise.”
