RCBC ramps up clean energy lending to over P60B amid coal phaseout

Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) has grown its renewable energy portfolio to over ₱60 billion in 2025 as it aggressively winds down its fossil fuel exposure.

The Yuchengco-led lender reported a 13% year-on-year increase in clean energy financing, up from ₱53 billion in 2024.

The portfolio backs 27 projects totaling more than 2,000 megawatts (MW) across solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal sectors.

Renewable energy now accounts for nearly half of RCBC’s total sustainable lending, reinforcing its status as the first local bank to commit to a full coal exit.

RCBC is on track to fully exit all coal exposures by 2031, a move to shield its portfolio from the stranded asset risks facing Southeast Asian legacy power projects. As of mid-2025, the bank’s renewable energy exposure is nearly three times larger than its remaining coal-related debt.

“Renewable energy has been the driving force behind RCBC’s eligible sustainable portfolio for over six years,” Chief Sustainability Officer Armi Lamberte said.
