RCBC eyes stable coins to make sending money home faster, cheaper

Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) is exploring the use of stablecoins for wholesale cross-border funding and liquidity management, as the Yuchengco-led lender looks to speed up settlement and cut costs for its remittance partners.

RCBC Transaction Banking Group head Martin Tirol said stablecoins could help address persistent bottlenecks in cross-border payments, including slow settlement cycles, limited availability outside banking hours and high currency conversion fees that erode the value of remittances.

The initiative marks RCBC’s latest push to modernize its remittance business as banks increasingly turn to digital infrastructure to make cross-border money transfers faster and more efficient.

“RCBC is no longer just a financial intermediary. It is a digital bridge for borderless money movement,” Tirol said in a statement.

RCBC has expanded its remittance reach to more than 100 countries through its Global Filipino Banking and Financial Technology Division, serving overseas Filipinos and international remittance partners.

The bank has also built an application programming interface, or API, ecosystem that allows global fintech and remittance companies to connect directly to its infrastructure.

The system enables partners to send funds to Philippine bank accounts and e-wallets and check transaction status in real time, reducing reliance on traditional banking processes.

RCBC said its strategy is aimed at cutting the delays, fees and other friction that have long weighed on cross-border remittances while making its network more interoperable with fintech platforms.

The listed lender was recently named Remittance Bank of the Year at the Asian Banking and Finance Awards. Tirol said the recognition reflected RCBC’s multi-year effort to improve remittance services for overseas Filipinos.
