The country’s gross international reserves (GIR) rose to $112.5 billion at the end of January 2026, providing a strong buffer against external economic shocks.
The reserves, which include foreign-denominated securities, foreign exchange, and other assets such as gold, are equivalent to 7.5 months’ worth of imports of goods and payments for services and primary income.
They also cover roughly 4.1 times the country’s short-term external debt based on residual maturity.
GIR act as a critical safeguard for the economy, enabling the country to pay for imports, service foreign debt obligations, and stabilize the currency.
The strong reserves position underlines the Philippines’ resilience amid global economic uncertainties and supports continued confidence in the country’s external liquidity.
