Total assets of the Philippine banking system grew more than 8% in February as lenders capitalized on resilient credit demand and increased investments in government securities.
According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), total assets climbed 8.3% to ₱29.19 trillion.
The expansion signals a robust financial sector despite the impact of prolonged high interest rates on borrowing costs.
“The rise in banking sector assets reflects healthy, disciplined growth,” said Jonathan Ravelas, senior Adviser at Reyes Tacandong & Co. “Loans are expanding alongside steady economic activity, while banks are also increasing investments in government securities to manage liquidity amid still‑elevated interest rates.”
Ravelas noted that while the growth indicates investor and consumer confidence remains intact, financial institutions are being increasingly selective and risk-aware in their deployments.
“Moving forward, asset growth should continue but at a more measured pace — focused on quality lending and balance‑sheet strength,” Ravelas added.
