Maya taps national ID, AI to cut customer onboarding time by 84%

Maya has integrated the Philippine National ID system with artificial intelligence to speed up customer onboarding as regulators seek to expand the use of government digital identity services across the financial sector.

The move comes as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) proposes requiring supervised financial institutions to use National ID authentication services for customer due diligence and identity verification.

Since early 2026, eligible Maya customers have been able to upgrade their accounts using National ID eVerify, the Philippine Statistics Authority’s identity verification service, without uploading a physical ID.

“National digital infrastructure gives us a trusted foundation to build on,” Maya Chief Technology Officer Alfred Lo said.

“By combining the National ID with homegrown AI and automation, we can remove friction for customers while keeping verification robust and scalable. It shows how shared digital infrastructure can make financial services easier to access and safer to scale.”

Eligible users enter their National ID number, which Maya checks through eVerify against government records, before completing verification with a video selfie. Additional information is requested only when needed, while customers who cannot be verified through eVerify can proceed with the regular ID-upload process without starting over.

Maya said it continues to apply BSP and other regulatory requirements covering know-your-customer procedures, screening and other checks.

The company also uses agentic AI in its KYC and account deduplication processes to validate information, identify potential duplicate accounts, conduct required checks and route exceptions for human review.

Maya said the system has cut consumer onboarding turnaround time by 84%, reducing repetitive processing and allowing employees to focus on exceptions, investigations and cases requiring human judgment.

The system was presented at the recent BSP AI Summit, where Maya was one of three companies invited to showcase applications of AI in the Philippine financial sector.

“For us, the real test of AI is not how advanced the model sounds. It is whether it solves a real customer problem safely, reliably and at scale,” Maya Head of Data Governance Melecio Valerio said.

The initiative is part of Maya’s broader use of machine learning, decision engines, behavioral scoring, anomaly detection and automation across credit, fraud management, personalization, customer service and operations.
