Maya hits profitability as Filipinos embrace digital finance

PLDT’s fintech unit Maya achieved group-wide profitability in December 2024, marking a major milestone in its expansion across digital banking, payments, and lending.

The company issued over 125,000 credit cards in just six months, underscoring its rapid scaling and growing influence in the country’s financial sector.

“Achieving profitability at the group level while scaling rapidly underscores our ability to drive sustainable growth,” said Shailesh Baidwan, Maya Group president and Maya Bank co-founder. “We are building a digital-first financial ecosystem that is accessible, innovative, and designed to empower millions of Filipinos consumers and MSME to save, borrow, invest and make and receive payments.”

Maya is among the few digital banks in the Philippines to reach profitability, highlighting the strength of its ecosystem-driven approach to financial services.

Its first credit card, the Landers Cashback Everywhere Credit Card, has seen strong demand since its August 2024 launch. Its fully digital application process and instant activation via the Maya app have accelerated adoption, particularly among first-time credit users, who make up nearly 40% of cardholders.

Customers outside Metro Manila account for 60% of the total base, reflecting Maya’s success in broadening financial access beyond urban centers.

Maya’s expansion in credit and digital banking has propelled its financial performance. By end-2024, its banking customer base surged 71% to 5.4 million, while its borrower base nearly doubled to 1.6 million. Deposits rose 59% year-over-year to P39 billion, and cumulative loan disbursements hit P92 billion.

The company also reinforced its dominance in digital payments, holding the largest market share in card acquiring and QRPH transactions. Its integrated financial services ecosystem—Maya Philippines for payments and Maya Bank for digital banking—continues to drive strong performance across key segments.

Beyond consumer banking, Maya is deepening its foothold in business banking and MSME-focused services. It has introduced bill payment solutions under Maya Business Deposit and customized loan terms for small enterprises to enhance financial flexibility. These initiatives align with its strategy to support businesses with seamless digital banking and financing solutions.
