Mastercard has partnered with AF Payments Inc. to introduce contactless payment options on Bonifacio Global City (BGC) buses, marking the first phase of a broader initiative to enhance public transport in Metro Manila.
The pilot program, launched in Taguig, is expected to expand to other transit systems, including EDSA buses and the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) in the coming phases.
The collaboration supports the Philippine government’s push to accelerate digital payments across various sectors, including transportation.
“We are excited to partner with Mastercard to launch the first phase of this important partnership. As an emerging and dynamic hub for global companies and innovative startups, Bonifacio Global City is the ideal location to kick off this rollout, which will not only improve transit options for local commuters, but also raise the efficiency and accessibility of public transport operations in line with global standards,” said JJ Moreno, president and CEO of AF Payments.
The contactless payments system, powered by Mastercard and the beep card platform, eliminates the need for cash or multiple tickets, streamlining the payment process for commuters.
Mastercard’s cybersecurity systems will also ensure protection against fraud and card skimming, with a $7 billion global investment in AI and cybersecurity to enhance transaction security.
Mastercard has enabled similar open-loop transit systems in cities such as London, Sydney, and Singapore, and aims to replicate that success in Metro Manila, contributing to the city’s digital transformation and improving public transportation infrastructure.
