Lucio Tan’s PNB profit climbs 23% amid improved asset quality

Philippine National Bank (PNB) posted a consolidated net income of P18.5 billion for the first nine months of 2025, up 23 percent from a year ago, as the bank benefited from stronger lending and investment activity alongside a sharp drop in loan loss provisions.

The Lucio Tan-led lender said total revenues climbed eight percent, driven by a nine percent rise in loans, a 13 percent increase in investment securities, and an 18 percent boost in fee-based income.

Other income also grew four percent, supported by gains from asset disposals and foreign exchange transactions.

Chief Financial Officer Francis Albalate noted that the improved results reflected targeted efforts to strengthen credit quality and risk management.

“The bank is now harvesting the benefits of its focus on improving the lending portfolio through deliberate acquisition of high-quality customers and enhancements in credit and lending processes and policies,” he said.

Provision for impairment and credit losses plunged 87 percent compared with the same period last year, following lower non-performing loans and an overall improvement in asset quality.

Operating expenses rose nine percent, reflecting higher business volumes and ongoing expansion initiatives.

As of September, PNB’s total assets reached P1.25 trillion, while liabilities stood at P1.02 trillion. Capital grew eight percent from December 2024, highlighting the bank’s strengthened financial position.

PNB president Edwin Bautista said the lender is preparing for continued growth through digital transformation and market diversification. “We expect steady business growth with a strong plan in place to grow corporate, commercial, and consumer businesses,” he said.

“The bank’s plan for digitalization will further expand opportunities across all areas of the business as the bank prepares itself for advancing innovations that will prioritize improving service to the bank’s customers,” Bautista added.
