The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has adjusted its economic forecast for the Philippines, predicting a robust performance in the years ahead.
In its latest assessment, the IMF raised its growth outlook for 2024 to 6.2 percent, up from the previous estimate of 6.0 percent. This upward revision reflects the strong momentum carried over from a robust fourth quarter in 2023, in line with the Philippine government’s target range of 6-7 percent.
Similarly, the IMF upgraded its forecast for 2025 to 6.2 percent from 6.1 percent, citing expectations of heightened domestic demand and increased investment activity.
Inflation is projected to remain below 4 percent for both 2024 and 2025, falling within the government’s target range of 2-4 percent. This suggests stable prices alongside economic expansion.
The Philippines’ anticipated growth of 6.2 percent in 2024 outpaces the average forecast for ASEAN countries, indicating its relatively strong economic position within the region.
Globally, the IMF maintains a growth projection of 3.2 percent for both 2024 and 2025, citing factors such as tighter monetary policies and reduced fiscal stimulus measures.
To sustainably unlock the Philippines’ growth potential, the IMF highlights the need for structural reforms. These reforms should focus on areas such as infrastructure development, education enhancement, and attracting foreign direct investments.
Moreover, the IMF recommends strengthening social safety programs and implementing a comprehensive climate change strategy, including the adoption of a carbon pricing mechanism. These measures are essential for ensuring long-term economic resilience and sustainability.
