From ‘bahala na’ to financial security: PH insurance premiums reach all-time high of P500B

Philippine insurance premiums breached the ₱500 billion threshold for the first time in 2025, a historic peak which Finance Secretary Frederick D. Go characterized as a structural shift in the nation’s economic stability.

Speaking at the Insurance Commission’s 77th anniversary on March 16, 2026, Go said the milestone reflects a “growing awareness” among Filipinos regarding financial protection.

Go noted that beyond the raw figures, the record reflects broader public participation and reaffirms the industry’s role as a cornerstone of economic resilience.

The industry’s total asset base expanded to ₱2.66 trillion by the end of 2025, the bulk of these funds are currently deployed in government securities and local investments, effectively providing the state with a stable, long-term credit line to finance national infrastructure and development priorities.

The growth was mirrored across sub-sectors, with health maintenance organizations (HMOs) disbursing ₱12.10 billion in benefits and claims during the year.

Meanwhile, the pre-need sector saw premium income climb to ₱23.94 billion by the final quarter of 2025, supported by the sale of 895,679 plans for education and memorial services.

Despite the record volume, the Finance Secretary signaled that further expansion depends on modernization and reaching underserved segments of the population.

Go urged the industry to accelerate its digital transformation to create faster and more secure systems while refining frameworks for microinsurance and Takaful, or Islamic insurance.

He also underscored the importance of strengthening collaboration with ASEAN and global partners to ensure local policies remain responsive and inclusive.
