The government on Thursday signaled the severity of tax collection program anew by shutting down 523 business establishments last year and the collection of close to P3 billion in unpaid taxes.
In summary, the government’s anti tax evasion program forced offending taxpayers to hand over P6.98 billion due the government last year alone.
Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez issued a statement saying Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) chief Caesar Dulay collected P2.95 billion worth of previously unpaid taxes due the government as it shuts down offending establishments that failed to honor their obligations.
This was on top of the collection of an additional P122.4 million in penalties from various enterprises in violation of registration-related offenses.
Its Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) program also haled before the Department of Justice (DOJ) 137 more entities who collectively owe the government P4.4 billion plus 17 other offenders before the Court of Tax Appeals with estimated tax liabilities totaling P1.4 billion, Dulay told Dominguez.
Dulay also reported having collected P3.91 billion from Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators as of end-December 2021.
Secretary Dominguez earlier vowed to collect the billions of pesos that remain uncollected from the estate of the late dictator and president Ferdinand Marcos.
