December turns out to be the best month to buy a smartphone

Like the professional banker who manages the various risks, the vigilant Filipino consumer ought to be keenly aware of the opportune time to buy or refrain from buying a smartphone because like most things economics, there is a cycle to it.

According to the Kuala Lumpur-based shopping aggregator iprice, the cheapest median price of a smartphone falls on a normal day and not on a sales day as may be understood by conventional wisdom.

Its survey on the price history of the ubiquitous gadget from July to December 2021, which coincides with the most number of sales days in the calendar, also shows smartphone prices were marked up the most on days leading up to double-numbered sales days like 10. 10, 11. 11 and 12. 12.

The same survey also shows that the best month to make a smartphone purchase is on December when the lowest average price of the gadget, at only P18,300, is observed.

Consumers are advised that the worst month to make a purchase is on October when a smartphone is priced the highest at P20,600 each.

These are the key takeaways of the iprice smartphone survey which found the Philippines with the highest median price for iPhones among the ASEAN 5 “despite having one of the average lowest wages.”
