Chinabank first half profit hits all-time high of P13B on solid lending growth

China Banking Corp. posted a record net income of ₱13 billion in the first half of 2025, a 14% increase from a year earlier, as strong loan growth and rising asset yields drove revenues sharply higher.

The bank’s return on equity hit 15.2%, while return on assets reached 1.6%—both among the highest in the local industry.

Total revenues climbed 34% to ₱38.9 billion, largely fueled by a 15% jump in net interest income to ₱34.9 billion. Net interest margin widened by 13 basis points to 4.57%.

“We continue to deliver strong operating results in the first semester while supporting the needs of our customers and contributing to the growth of our economy,” said president and CEO Romeo D. Uyan Jr.

Chinabank’s gross loans grew 18% year-on-year to ₱964.7 billion, with credit to consumer and corporate clients rising alongside accelerating economic activity and improved confidence.

Despite reducing its non-performing loan ratio to 1.6%, well below the 3.5% industry average, the lender set aside ₱6.5 billion in provisions, lifting NPL coverage to 125%.

Deposits grew 5% to ₱1.3 trillion, supported by a 10% increase in checking and savings accounts.

“We are sustaining our growth momentum as we execute our strategy and focus on delivering quality service and value to our clients and stakeholders,” Uyan said.

Operating expenses rose to ₱16.6 billion on increased investments in technology, staffing, and higher transaction volumes. But with revenue growth outpacing costs, the bank trimmed its cost-to-income ratio to 43%.

Consolidated assets rose 8% to ₱1.7 trillion, while total equity grew 15% to ₱174 billion. The bank’s capital adequacy ratio stood at 15.62%, and book value per share climbed to ₱64.65, also up 15%.

“Our robust performance was driven by our commitment to addressing client needs while effectively managing risks and promoting efficiencies. We have ensured that our balance sheet remains strong. Additionally, the recent accolades we received recognize Chinabank’s customer focus and banking excellence,” said chief finance officer Patrick D. Cheng.
