BSP, ADB promote Philippines as hub for Islamic finance at regional roadshows

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) are urging Indonesian and Malaysian business leaders to capitalize on growing opportunities in the Philippines’ Islamic finance sector.

At recent roadshows in Kuala Lumpur, both institutions underscored the Philippines’ openness to foreign investments and its commitment to developing a robust Islamic finance ecosystem.

The BSP has introduced regulatory reforms designed to encourage both domestic and international participation in Islamic banking. These reforms are part of the central bank’s broader strategy to promote financial inclusion, particularly in underserved regions such as the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The BSP is also keen to support the entry of new players into the sector as part of its efforts to strengthen the country’s financial system.

At the Kuala Lumpur event, BSP Deputy Governor Chuchi G. Fonacier outlined the Philippines’ long-term vision, emphasizing the goal of building a comprehensive Islamic finance system that delivers ethical financial solutions for all. BSP Assistant Governor Arifa A. Ala added that the Philippines is fully committed to fostering a vibrant Islamic finance market, noting the potential for enhanced financial inclusion across the country.

The ADB, through its “Unlocking the Potential of Islamic Finance in the Philippines: A Market Analysis and Landscape Report”, showcased the Philippines’ potential to be a key player in the global Islamic finance landscape.

Around 100 senior executives from Islamic banks, fintech companies, industry associations, and regulatory bodies attended the roadshows, engaging in discussions on investment opportunities and the Philippines’ positive economic outlook.

In addition to the main events, bilateral meetings in Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur with major industry players, including Bank BJB Syariah, Bank Mega Syariah, and HSBC Amanah Malaysia, helped deepen regional ties and highlight the Philippines’ strategic approach to growing its Islamic finance sector.
