American Express and BDO unveil new travel rewards card

BDO Unibank, Inc. adds the American Express Explorer Credit Card to its product offerings with partner American Express Co.

Bankero, BDO Senior Executive Vice-President and Consumer Banking Group Head Rolando C. Tanchanco said that the travel rewards credit card is a timely addition to its wide range of credit card products with American Express as consumer confidence in travel returns.

First introduced in Australia in 2016 and then in Hong Kong in 2021, the Explorer card makes its first appearance in Southeast Asia as it launches in the Philippines.

Every P40 spent using the card will be equivalent to one membership rewards point and the points do not expire, the two banks said.

Reward points can be redeemed one-to-one as frequent flyer miles at six partner airlines: Philippine Airlines (Mabuhay Miles), Singapore Airlines (KrisFlyer), Cathay Pacific Airlines (Cathay Membership),Thai Airways (Royal Orchid Plus), Malaysia Airlines (Enrich), and Delta Airline (Delta SkyMiles).

Points are also convertible to loyalty points from Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors.

Accountholders will also be given 2,000 bonus Membership Rewards points if they spend P600,000 in a year. The annual fee will be waived for the first year of use and if cardholders spend P450,000 per year.

Cardholders can also avail of travel accident and inconvenience coverage as well as other benefits including year-round deals, rebates or cashback, and savings from BDO partner merchants.
