AI won’t replace humans: BSP’s Remolona calls for strong safeguards

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Eli Remolona Jr. called for strong governance and safeguards as banks increasingly adopt artificial intelligence, saying the technology should complement rather than replace human judgment.

Speaking at the BSP AI Summit 2026 on July 27, Remolona said AI could help financial institutions identify patterns, generate ideas and navigate complex information, but decisions over its use should remain with people.

“AI can identify patterns, generate ideas, and help us make sense of complexity. But deciding where we want to go or what outcomes we value most by using AI, that remains our responsibility,” Remolona said.

The summit brought together regulators, banking executives and technology professionals to discuss the responsible adoption of AI in the Philippine financial sector.

BSP Deputy Governor Lyn Javier said the central bank was committed to ensuring appropriate safeguards are in place to protect consumers as AI plays a bigger role in financial services.

Participants discussed the use of AI to improve customer service, strengthen fraud detection and increase operational efficiency, as well as the importance of high-quality data for risk management and decision-making.

The summit, themed “From Pilot to Practice: AI Adoption in the Philippine Financial Sector,” also examined how the technology could broaden financial opportunities while managing risks arising from wider adoption.
