A pocket of calm in the middle of Makati’s concrete jungle is getting a fresh lease on life.
Security Bank Corp. and Japan’s MUFG Bank have restored the Tsuruki-en Japanese Garden at Washington SyCip Park, giving workers, residents and visitors a refreshed green space to step away from the bustle of the central business district.
The restoration comes as Security Bank and MUFG mark 10 years of partnership and nearly a decade since the garden was first unveiled in 2017 by the two lenders and the late businessman Washington SyCip.
“The Tsuruki-en Garden is a special place that brings a sense of calm and reflection to the middle of a busy city,” Security Bank president and CEO Victor Lee said.
“As we celebrate ten years of partnership with MUFG, we are proud to renew this space and share it with the public. We hope more people will discover and enjoy this unique corner of Makati,” he added.
Inspired by “wa,” the Japanese concept of harmony and balance, Tsuruki-en combines stone, water, greenery and carefully landscaped spaces. The restored garden also uses sustainable materials sourced in the Philippines.
Beyond providing a green refuge in one of Metro Manila’s busiest business districts, the garden serves as a symbol of the partnership between Security Bank and MUFG and the broader ties between the Philippines and Japan.
“Refreshing Tsuruki-en is a simple but meaningful way to care for the city we share,” MUFG Bank Manila Branch country head Masami Yoshitake said.
“We are honoured to mark this milestone with Security Bank by helping preserve a place where people can find calm, enjoy nature and feel welcome. It reflects the care, respect and shared purpose that guide our partnership and our commitment to the Philippines.”
