Maya said it has cut consumer onboarding turnaround time by 84% after integrating the Philippine National ID system and artificial intelligence into its identity-verification process.
Eligible customers can upgrade their accounts by entering their National ID number instead of uploading a physical ID. Maya checks the information against government records through National ID eVerify and completes verification with a video selfie.
Customers who cannot be verified through eVerify can proceed with the regular ID-upload process without starting over.
The rollout comes as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has proposed requiring supervised financial institutions to use National ID authentication services for customer due diligence and identity verification.
“By combining the National ID with homegrown AI and automation, we can remove friction for customers while keeping verification robust and scalable,” Maya Chief Technology Officer Alfred Lo said.
Maya said it uses so-called agentic AI to automate parts of its know-your-customer process, including validating information, detecting possible duplicate accounts and routing exceptions for human review.
The company said the system continues to comply with BSP requirements on customer identification, verification and screening.
Maya presented the technology at the recent BSP AI Summit, where it was one of three companies invited to showcase applications of artificial intelligence in the Philippine financial sector.
The fintech company also uses machine learning, behavioral scoring, anomaly detection and automation in areas including credit, fraud management, customer service and operations.
