Apple Pay debuts with UnionBank, Metrobank, GoTyme and Chinabank support

Apple Inc. launched Apple Pay in the Philippines on Tuesday, expanding its mobile payments service into one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing digital payments markets.

The service allows users to make contactless and online payments using an iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad or Mac.

Apple Pay is initially available to customers of China Banking Corp., GoTyme Bank, Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. (Metrobank) and Union Bank of the Philippines with eligible Mastercard and Visa debit, credit or prepaid cards.

The rollout enables cardholders to pay at merchants accepting contactless payments, as well as within apps and on websites that support Apple Pay.

“The Philippines is home to a digital-first generation that is rapidly embracing a vision for a cashless future, all while expecting security and privacy at every step,” Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president for Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said in a statement.

Apple Pay replaces card details with a unique device account number and transaction-specific security code, meaning card numbers are not stored on users’ devices or Apple servers.

GoTyme Bank CEO Nate Clarke said the launch would give customers “an easy and secure way to pay wherever they shop.”

Union Bank of the Philippines president and CEO Ana Aboitiz Delgado said Apple Pay would provide cardholders with a faster and more secure way to pay in stores, online and through mobile applications.

Visa Philippines country manager Jeffrey Navarro said the launch would expand digital payment options for consumers and visitors while supporting the country’s shift toward a cash-lite economy.

Apple said thousands of merchants across the Philippines now accept Apple Pay, allowing customers to make purchases in stores, in apps and online using compatible Apple devices.
