GSIS earmarks P15B in emergency loans for Mindanao earthquake victims

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has set aside P 15.1 billion in emergency financial assistance for more than 608,000 members and retirees affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao.

GSIS president and general manager Wick Veloso announced the relief package during a stakeholders’ dialogue and said the fund was also preparing to expedite insurance claims for government agencies whose infrastructure was damaged by the quake.

“Our thoughts are with our fellow Filipinos in Mindanao affected by this powerful earthquake,” Veloso said. “The GSIS is ready to provide accessible financial relief to help our members, pensioners, and partner government agencies recover and rebuild.”

The emergency loan program will be available to qualified active government employees and old-age or disability pensioners who live or work in areas officially placed under a state of calamity.
Applications will be accepted until Sept. 7, 2026.

Under the program, eligible borrowers with existing emergency loans may apply for a package of up to P40,000, with net proceeds capped at P20,000. First-time borrowers and those without outstanding emergency loan balances may borrow up to P20,000.

The loans carry an annual interest rate of 6% and are payable over 36 months. Funds will be released directly through policyholders’ transaction cards.

Veloso said applications would be processed through the GSIS Touch mobile application, the pension fund’s proprietary digital platform, to ease pressure on physical branches and speed up access to assistance.

GSIS also urged government agencies, local government units and policyholders with insured properties damaged by the earthquake to submit insurance claims as soon as possible to facilitate faster processing.
