PH forex buffers hit one-year low as GIR slips to $104B

The Philippines’ foreign exchange buffers fell to a one-year low in April, highlighting pressure on the central bank as it navigates a volatile global environment.

Gross international reserves (GIR) slipped to $104.1 billion last month, preliminary data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas showed, down from $106.6 billion in March and below $105.3 billion a year earlier.

The reserves—comprising gold, foreign currencies and securities—are a key measure of the country’s ability to absorb external shocks, service foreign debt and manage volatility in the peso.

Despite the decline, the BSP said the external position remains “robust.” The reserves are equivalent to 6.9 months of imports of goods and payments of services and primary income.

This is well above the three-month adequacy benchmark, while also covering 3.8 times the country’s short-term external debt based on residual maturity.

Reserves serve as a buffer for dollar liquidity needs and allow the central bank to intervene in foreign exchange markets during periods of volatility.

The BSP did not provide details on the drivers of the April decline, though valuation losses in gold holdings and government foreign debt repayments typically weigh on the stockpile.

The GIR remains a key support for the Philippines’ investment-grade credit rating, reinforcing external stability amid global financial uncertainty.
