Bank of the Philippine Islands has rolled out a low-cost insurance product targeting three of the country’s most financially devastating illnesses, offering coverage for cancer, stroke and heart attack for as little as P859 a year.
The plan, BPI Kaya Care, is aimed at broadening access to critical illness protection, which many Filipinos either can’t afford or find too complicated, BPI consumer banking head Maria Cristina Go said in a briefing.
“For too long, critical illness insurance has felt complex and out of reach. We wanted to change that,” Go said. “BPI Kaya Care is more than a policy — it’s a partner that helps families focus on recovery without financial strain.”
The product, offered through BPI/MS Insurance Corp., allows customers aged 18 and up to purchase basic coverage. Early-stage diagnoses trigger a 50% payout, while late-stage or major cases receive the full benefit.
Go said the coverage is meant to cushion families from treatment and medication costs that can quickly become overwhelming. “The fear is not the diagnosis itself but the potential inability to secure the necessary treatment,” she said. “This is why insurance is not nice to have — it is essential to peace of mind.”
Unlike traditional plans where these illnesses are sold as add-on riders, Go said Kaya Care focuses solely on the three conditions. “Our product is not a rider. This is the main and only coverage under Kaya Care,” she added.
