IMF cuts Philippine 2025 growth projection, citing global headwinds and tariff impact

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised its growth outlook for the Philippines, lowering its 2025 forecast to 5.5% from the previous 6.1%.

This adjustment comes as the country faces external challenges, including weaker-than-expected growth in the final quarter of 2024 and pressures from global economic uncertainties.

In its latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) released on Tuesday, the IMF pointed to several factors contributing to the downgrade, including the impact of higher tariffs on Philippine exports to the U.S., reduced growth expectations for key trading partners, and tightening global financial conditions. These external pressures have combined to affect the country’s growth trajectory, leading to a more cautious forecast.

Despite the revision, the IMF remains optimistic about the Philippines’ economic resilience, with domestic consumption continuing to be the driving force behind growth.

The Philippines’ economy grew by 5.23% in the last quarter of 2024, maintaining nearly the same pace as the previous quarter’s 5.24%. Overall, the country’s full-year growth stood at 5.7%, slightly missing both the government’s target of 6% to 6.5% and the IMF’s earlier forecast of 5.8%.

One of the significant factors influencing the revised forecast is the higher tariffs imposed on Philippine goods exported to the U.S., along with slower growth projections for the country’s major trade partners. These external pressures have weighed on the country’s export performance and broader economic prospects.

The IMF pointed to some positive developments, including recent legislative reforms that could potentially accelerate investment and infrastructure projects, especially through public-private partnerships. Coupled with stable domestic consumption, these factors could help the country navigate the external challenges ahead.
